Hello Everyone...
My photo's on March 2nd of the Pileated Woodpecker generated several questions. It's my hope these photo's will help answer those questions? These are other photo's taken on March 2nd at the Midland Cemetery.
Enjoy!!
Yes, he was digging the first hole and it is quite deep, this photo shows he can stick his whole head in there. It is my understanding, they dig these holes looking for food....ants, worms, bugs...especially after the hole is completed and the tree sap flows.
In this photo, you can see, he puts everything he's got into digging his hole. Look at the extension of his complete body to gain momentum.
In this photo, I happen to catch a piece of wood flying. Look at his wing for the wood chip, it is a fairly good size piece.
In this photo, you can see what the hole looks like when he's done. Its my guess the hole is about 5 inches long.
